BOOK BUYING

When I go out, the first place I always want to stop is the closest book store. Even if I’m on the other side of town I always seem to make my way over. Once I actually arrive, I always try to say, “Taylor, we are only going to browse and maybe pick up one new book.” Then, after an hour of combing through the entire store, I walk out with a full bag and a sense of excitement and slight disappointment. Once I arrive home, I seem to get the general look of “Really?” accompanied with a lecture about how I do not need any more books, and that I should be saving instead of spending.

But is that really fair? Reasonable even? Why should I have to be upset with my self for buying something that I enjoy and am actually going to use?

I’ve been considering this for a while now, and I think I finally have reached an answer. I shouldn’t have to feel ashamed to spend the money I earn on what I want, and although there is a happy medium, stopping cold turkey is not only unreasonable, but unrealistic.

When I buy books, it’s not just for show, it’s because I actually want to jump into the story, fall in love with the characters, and enjoy the plot. If I am going to spend time on something I’m not only invested in, but interested in I think that it’s a great idea! It also sets a great habit in place that will be kept as my life gets more hectic, encouraging me to continue reading.

On the other hand, as my to-be-read book count increases, my ability to keep up slowly goes away. When the stack of books that hasn’t been read is taller than you, it’s not only kind of scary, but it almost makes reading more of a chore than a fun activity, and I mean who has all that shelf space? There is definitely a happy medium, and that spot is different for every person.

So in closing, I hope that all future book purchases is not only smiled on but encouraged! Buying books is not something to be ashamed of, and jumping into a great story is something that should be anticipated and celebrated! Let me know in the comments below your feelings on this subject, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Love,
Taylor

PS: Another great tool for reading is the library! It’s super easy to set up an account and then you can make sure you love the book and would actually reread it before you buy it. Also, for those extra books lying around donation is always a great option. Giving a book to a new home where it can be enjoyed is great, and it’s really rewarding to feel like you could potentially brighten someone’s day just by donating a story.
